Myostatin (also known as GDF8) is a hormone that blocks muscle growth and appears to work at elevated levels after muscle tears. It has been identified as a new drug target in preventing muscle atrophy after an ACL tear, allowing a quicker return to sports. Blocking the protein using myostatin inhibitors has been shown to improve fracture healing and enhance muscle regeneration.
